Ashes by Susan Beth Pfeffer

Something to think about:

1. What does Ashleigh's father say about dreams?

2. What do you thik about Dad's request?

3. Do you thik Ashleigh will give her father the money? What clues from the story support your answer?

  1. First comment maybe? :) The thing I do not understand about this story is that are the girl's parents still in collage or what? It says both of them are still trying to get degree.

I agree with Sara, I used to know a guy who went to college classes every so many nights because he never went when he was 19.

  10. i really dont think they are still in college, because people can get degrees and go to classes.

    ReplyDelete
  11. *after a few years, like when they are 21 or older.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I agree with brittiany but other than that I think that this was a good story but it could have benn better.

    Sara,
they are in college. They never had the chance to go before, so they decided to go now. You can tell that at least the mother goes to college when the story says, "Mom, who was still working on her degree..." I really don't think her parents are STILL in college, from the age of 19. Unless this girl is very young.

  14. "Ashes" dad seems really nice, he makes her feel real confident about her self, he is really nice, i wish i had a dad who always liked what i wore. :p

    1. No, her dad is manipulative. She's convinced to steal money from HER OWN MOTHER!!! This is probably what Ashes's father did to her mother.

  15. ISAAAC,
i thought everyone thought like, they were like 18-21 years old going to college.
but my aunt just got back from medical school:p and she had to get a "DEGREE" she went for 4 years and she wanted to be an x-ray tech. she was about 37:p

  16. I didnt really like this story. I think it is confusing. I also have a lot of questions. Who did ashleigh's dad owe money? did ashleigh take the money? And who is still in college? Mom? Dad? Ashliegh?

This dad seems to... fake. How many dads do you know today that will help a blind person across the street? Not too many, but some would. Some of the other things are more believable, like helping a lady change her tire. That is something my dad would do, what about your guy's?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I agree with Garret this story was also boring.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Does the Dad plan to steal the money he owes?
I think that the dad wants Ashley to go to her house, take the money her mom had stored away, and then give it back to him so that he could pay off the couple of hundred dollards he owed to the not-so-friendly poeple. I hope that Ashley doesnt do it for him or they find a different way to earn the money.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I dont think her dad is fake. Alot of people would help a blind person across the street. A more believable question is why would a blind person be walking across a street?

anyway the dad seems nice. he seems like no matter what happens he really cares for "Ashes".

Seriously, why did her mom freak out aboutt the nickname. Its just a nickname.

I don't see what is wrong with the mother. She gets so made because Ashleigh's father calls her Ashes. If I was a girl, and my name was Ashleigh, I think Ashes would be an awesome nickname. It just sounds so cool... Ashes? Thats awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I liked this story but what is with her mom she went all psycho when her dad called her Ashes I don't see the big deal in it not like the world will end by calling someone ashes right? I mean really ITS JUST A NICKNAME!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Isaac M. (Professional Blogger)May 26, 2009 at 12:41 PM

See, Brittiany agrees with me. :P
Ashes is the coolest nickname in the world!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I honestly don't feel I'd like the nickname Ashes, no offense. :x

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't think I would like the name Ashes either. It reminds me of remains or someone being cremated. Yuck!:)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Why do you think the mother got mad over the name "Ashes" as opposed to Ashleigh? The author gives you, the reader, clues in the story to explain this problem. Who thinks they know the answer?:)

    ReplyDelete
  27. i am with Marc, Zack and whoever else doesn't know if the parents are in college i don't get it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I liked this story because i can relate to it

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think that they are still in college but they went back for another degree like they stopped at bachlors and want a masters

    ReplyDelete
  30. wow! i think "ashes" dad is setting a really bad example for his daughter!
what did he do to owe the 200 dollars?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Whoa, i tottaly got a different impression on Ashliegh's dad. Why is he making her use her moms emergencys money?! gahh! why cant he just get a job or something, instead of jepordizing the money that her mom may need in a emergency?
it takes like 2 weeks of work to get 200 bucks.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think the mom really need to take a chill pill its just a nickname mostly everyone in my family has a nickname that usually has nothing to do with their name.. (:
At least he nickname has the beginning of her name in it... :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Why is the mom so crazy about the nickname??

    ReplyDelete
  34. Are the parents still in College or what??The stor y was really hard to follow i couldnt stay on task.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I so far like ashes dad, allthough i havent finished it her dad seems very nice and inspirational. He kindof reminds me of my father, how he is always wanting me to do different things when i grow up. But i think its just because he wants the best for me and i think thats what ashes dad wants for her.

    ReplyDelete
  36. i think the mom needs to take a chill pill! her dad just gave her a nickname. i think the mom is just trying to pick a fight because she is still hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  37. i agree with you lauren her dad is pretty cool:)

Alright, So I've been reading Ashes some, and I know I said I liked the name Ashes before, but Ashleigh's dad says Ashes in every sentence that has to do with her... it gets annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree with Lauren totally about "Ashes" dad is VERY inspirational!!! :D

    ReplyDelete
  40. i think this story was good..but i wish i knew what ended up happening.
i think ashes should have just told her dad no..and that if he wanted the money so bad he could ask her mom his self.

    ReplyDelete
  41. ms. Whitney,
i agree with you! i would hate to have the nick name ashes! cuz it makes me thing of cremated people!:/

    ReplyDelete
  42. At first i liked her dad, he reminded me of my dad, but then when he asked her to take the money!!! OMG. My dad would never ask me to do that, and i think any good dad would never had put their child in that situation, its just getting the kid too involved and puts them in danger. Im predicting (hoping) that ashes realized this and doesnt steal the money and tells her dad she just couldnt do it. But i can see where she would be pressured to steal it for her own fathers safety and she would want to let her own father down. I can understand whats shes feeling.

    ReplyDelete
  43. if i were in that situation i would tell my dad that i wasnt going to do that for him and that if he wanted the money then to ask my mom for it because she said that her dad wasnt always reliable and if he didn't have the money for a long time then her mom would have found out that she took it and probably would have got her in trouble.i think it is so mean of her dad to put her in a situation where she feels bad for him enough to steal from her mom...if i were her i would have probably told my mom that he asked me to do that, because it would have made me mad that he would ask me to do something like that in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I guess her mom was right after all her dad is an irresponsible bum! i can't believe he would ask that of his own daughter.at first i liked her dad too, but now he just sounds like a loser.

I didnt like the story. It was practically another cliff hanger. Did she take the money or not? Sigh. Her dad is pretty stupid for wanting to take the emergency money.

    PREDICTION
The father will get the 200 dollars and not pay Ashes back, and mysteriously "disappear"

    ReplyDelete
  46. im really wondering what ashes's dad did to her mom that was sooo bad?
her dad always brings it up of how he's already hurt her enough...

    ReplyDelete
  47. OH MY GOSH.!
    Yet again, another cliff hanger.
I was really liking this story, till it ended.

I want to know what happened.! /:

    ReplyDelete
  48. I am wondering what her dad barrowed the money for, he said it was for something big that would make him alot of money. But it never said what. And im wondering what would happen to him if he didnt get the money to the people he barrowed it from, in time??

    ReplyDelete
  49. I thought that this story was decent. I personally didn't like the dad. I don't like that he asked his daughter to steal from her mom. That wasn't a very good thing to do.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I agree with Lauren, I want to know that "big" project that ashley's father was working on. He made it sound like something huge and successful, but im not sure it really was... I wish the story would of cleared that up, that way you could of known whether or not Ashley's choice was the best, or not.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I agree with Lanie. I want to know what her dad did so bad to her mom.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I agree with your prediction Isaac, I would figure a person like him would take off without a word and spend the so called "money" he has ahold of.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Isaac M. (Professional Blogger)May 29, 2009 at 12:33 PM

This was the best story of the three... or four? I didn't like any of the others because of the confusement and boringness. I honestly like the cliff hangers more than these. HINT HINT MS. WHITNEY.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I agree with brittany it sounds like her dad is a shady person, so who knows what he wass actually spending his money on.

    ReplyDelete
  55. What does the father do for a living?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Wow! I really liked this story. I think the father was a pretty bad influence for "Ashes" but i also think shes smart enough to follow in his footsteps.

    ReplyDelete
  57. is the mom taking a class or in college or what.
did they have a child at a young age?? this is a good story so far! :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. also i think if ashleigh likes her nickname, ash, her mom should lay off her dad. But then again this big project sounds kinda ehh!? im mot sure if its so huge! :/

    ReplyDelete
  59. yeah i'm with Tiffany, it isn't as if he says it every single time to annoy her but it realy is nothing to freak out about.

    ReplyDelete
  60. About college, just because her parent is in college does not mean that they're young parents, they might be going back to get a higher degree

    ReplyDelete
  61. And for the dad owing $200 abd having his daughter steling it back, that's pretty bad. And i'm not being like Isaac and saying everyones a drunk but if yout think you will make your daughter a necklace of stars then maybe he lost the money because of drinking too much :D

    ReplyDelete
  62. The name Ashes in this story is meant as something that represents both death and life. As some of you say, it is a creepy name, because it reminds you of cremations and death. This is the way Ashleigh's mom sees it. But, ashes can also symbolize life. They are a symbol of rebirth (what does the Phoenix come out of?). Some of you saw her name as beautiful. This is the way her dad sees it. The name of the story and girl parallels the parents; personality wise and in their reactions to her and each other.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I think that she didnt gave the money to her father at the end of the story because she started to realise that he wasnt as great as she always thought. She started to see him like her mother always had. Finally, Ashes used to saw him like her hero, someone who's always happy and optimistic, but her vision of him changed and she started to see her mother like her hero. Her dad wasnt that comforting person anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  64. i dont understand how the story and girl are parallel, can u elaborate?

    ReplyDelete
  65. nobody really replied to the questions at the top ... ?

    ReplyDelete
  66. What fucking grade are you kids in, 6? The whole point is that the dad is a thief, liar, and manipulative. The mother likely went back to college to finish or get a different or higher degree, but that detail is not tantamount to understanding of the purpose of the story.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, I am in 6th grade, but I know right?!?!?!?!? You're so right!!!! Can't ANYONE see that? She's convinced to steal money from HER OWN MOTHER!!! This is probably what Ashes's father did to her mother.

  67. what are some themes?

    ReplyDelete
  68. I'm thinking that morality could be a theme and the difference between making a good and bad decision and the fact that ashes has to choose between her mom or dad or her own gut-feeling. Another theme could be maintaining honor in idealistic expectations. If she "borrows" from her mom without asking, she will lose her honor and if she doesn't her hands will be kept clean.

    ReplyDelete
  69. That is corrcet.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Wow this story went right over all of your heads...

    ReplyDelete
  71. Heeeyy ! What the heck happened in the ending?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Dad sounds so manipulative

    ReplyDelete
  73. This was literally the most unhelpful blog ever. Not only did almost no one answer the questions (except for chode), you all focused on details completely irrelevant to the story. I feel bad for Ms. Whitney having you guys as students. That will be all.
