Looking For Work by Gary Soto

Things to think about:

1. Why did Gary want to imitate the family in Father Knows Best?

2. What does Gary seem to like about his own life?

3. At the end of the story, Gary is once again looking for work. Why?

  3. I do believe that Gary looked for more work because he wanted more money, but I don't think that is the reason, it's just a simple guess to predict to what he will do next.

  4. I didnt like this story, it was very boring, i really didnt get the whole point of it. But i thought it was interesting that a little kid would want to work and work and work. The family seemed pretty normal, not all perfect like Gary wanted which didnt really seem normal.

  5. Zack- Your view makes alot of sense. I agree with you comepletley

  6. I think that Gary was probably poor which was why he was always looking for work?

  7. This story was kind of boring though well anyway I still liked it because it reminded me of when I was a little kid and my siter was babysitting me and I wanted to buy something from the store and then when I finished raking the leafs my siter just gave me the money so I did all that work for no reason! <(-,-)>

  9. I think this story is ok so far and Im woundering is Gary older than Little John?

  10. This story was long, boring, and stupid(in my opinion). I didnt like this story of all.

  11. I also agree with Zack

  12. This story was honestly SUPER BORING to me. But I thought the main character was kind of related to me in the way of how I want my family to be more "normal." But, whata is a "normal" family and why do most people want one. Can't everyone just be their on unique person and be happy with that? Anyways, I think it was very responsible of Gary to look for work so he could have his own money. Bravo Gary. (:

The story was not entertaining compared to the others. To tell you the truth, I liked it NONE. I even like the cliff hangers more than this story, and I hardly like those at all. It was just a boring story, and I could NOT get into it. Sorry.

    Jack,
I was wondering the same thing. Everything is so cheappp. Maybe the 1920's?

  21. i got really bored when i read this :p :/

  22. This story was very boring and nothing really happened.

  23. Okay, I think we all can agree, this story was WAYY BORING.?!
Like there was no real "meaning" tot this story.
If you agree say I or state your opinion. >_>

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with Jack when did this take place?
The story was hard to concentrate because it was pretty boring.

  25. Kayla- I agree with you, i think unless your family is like a bunch of stalkers and weirdos, you should love your family for who r=they are and not want to change them. Your right why cant everyone just be unique?!

    ReplyDelete
  26. oh, and i agree with sara :p nothing exciting happened which made it boring.

    ReplyDelete
  27. this wasnt my favorite story it was kind of boring and i dont really understand it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Lauren-As I agree with you. No one should try to change anyone, let alone their family. Bottom linee, let people be who they want to be.. unless their like some freaky weird person. Then you might want to get them some help. (;

  29. I think Gary is a fine young lad for doing all that work he does but i do think he wants his family to be like one on a television show instead of being who they actually are.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well, i didnt think this story was necessarily boring, it just didnt relate to me. I agree with kayla about what the standard is for a "normal" family, because i actually think that the main character's family is more normal than the family's he portrays in his head from T.V. Most family's dont wear suits and pearls to eat in, and they don't make small talk...they laugh loudly and dont care if they say something stupid because its their family, and they shouldnt have to care.

    ReplyDelete
  31. This story was mostly boring because their was not a main plot or intersting plot. and there were no exciting events...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Mark, I was simply making a prediction of what and why Gary was looking for more work, it doesn't have to be accurate, but it's a good way to share ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think it's okay to want your family to be normal, I sometimes want that. But you just have to learn to deal with it. I also think it was a good thing for Gary to work for his own money.

    ReplyDelete
  34. This story is very unentertaining Ha big word spelt wrong, but like everyone has been saying this story is very boring.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I also agree with Brittany, most families dont eat in suits and with pearls on.

    ReplyDelete
  36. i also think this story was super boring.. all it seemed like the did was drink KOOL-AID!! ;D

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think that the main characers veiw about working is very important because he's learning life lessons early. He is working to earn what he wants, instead of it just being given to him. I think that family's that are so wealthy and get whatever they want grow up and figure out that thats not always that case, and that most of the time you have to put hard work and some elbow grease into the job if you want the full reward. I think that the main character will never run into problems like these because he's been taught and has taught himself to never take for granted what he reiceves and he also takes pride in the work that he does.

    ReplyDelete
  38. umm...what was the meaning of this story?
    it wasnt really about anything...

    ReplyDelete
  39. This story kindof reminds me of when i was little or just a few years ago, when i would always have lemonaid stands and unlike Gary i would never make any money but it reminds me of like how i would always try to make money.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Daelyn- What would be your definition of a "normal" family anyways.?

I feel the world has nothing to actually be labled "normal" anymore. It's kind of just an overused term that doesn't mean much, at least to me.
Following the crowd can become quite boring.

    BE UNIQUE.! (:

    ReplyDelete
  41. i think the main character was watching t.v. and thought that that was real life but in reality it's not..most family's dont sit down in suits and jewlery and eat dinner together...i think he wanted to be like the families on t.v. because they acted like they had the perfect life...and he thought that if his family acted like white families then white people would treat them the same as they treat other white people.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I dont think there really is a definition to normal, i just think as long as you are living by good morals and values then heck, your just as normal as everyone else. being popular or weird or pretty or ugly none of those listed above is normal or not normal its just you, your always going to be normal to yourself but its how others see you. And that never matters.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Marissa, that is a rediculous comment. There was way more to this story than drinking Kool-Aid..If that is all you got out of it, I suggest you read it again.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I would have to say they seem like hey drink alot of Kool-Aid. This also reminds me when i was a little kid trying to make money to buy what i wanted. You have to learn how to earn things yourself when your older so why start now like they did.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think that the main character is working to get more money becuze bakc then fifteen cents got quite a bit of stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I have heard a few people ask what the point or lesson was in this story...any guesses? Several of you were rather close to explaining the lesson in your entries:)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think that the lesson in this story is that if you work you get rewarded in some way.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Kayla- I'm guessing a normal family would be fun and loving. I'm not going to stereotype it. But a normal family is people who are comfortable around eachother and just like to have fun with eachother.

Brittany- I also agree with you again about him working. I can relate in that way from working in the summer. When I detasseled I learened that you do have to work hard to get what you want.

    ReplyDelete
  49. My guess for the lesson is something like,
work hard and you'll get farther in life.?
    Am I close? (:

    ReplyDelete
  50. Kayla..that is definitely one of the lessons in this story..there are more though..does anyone else have a guess?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I kind of liked this story. Gary seemed like a very hard worker and a good friend

    ReplyDelete
  52. Daelyn - Have you ever read the definition of normal.?

    Here's one I found,
conforming to the standard or the common type; usual; not abnormal; regular; natural

That sounds a little boring to me. :|

FAMILIES AE SUPPOSED TO BE DIFFRENT.! (:

So why not say you want like a fun family instead of a "normal" family.?

SOrry, this subject bothers me very much. The whole "normal" thing.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I don't really agree with Gary's perception of a perfect normal family. I dont really think that there is such a thing as a "normal" family.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Kayla,
Don't apologize for your comments about normalsy. You are right on topic. There is no such thing as normal. Really in today's society being different makes you normal.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I agree with Mark T.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Was the story setting in the past?? If it wasn't people really underpaid Gary. They only paid him like five cents to twenty-five cents for doing something worth atleast five dollars, like raking leaves.

    ReplyDelete
  57. cass, haha :p
im pretty sure it takes place in the past!

and i agree with kaylee! i dont think there is such a thing as a normal family

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think this took place in the past because tworads the end a coke bottle got them a dime and now its only like a penny. Also i enjoyed the end of the story. I like the story line also because i think alot of people like to act like or immatate people on television.

    ReplyDelete
  59. i agree with lauren the story was kind of boring. I don't think any family is normal there is all different kind of families.

    ReplyDelete
  60. i wouldn't want a perfect family that would be no fun at all you wouldn't be able to do anyhting relaxing you'd have to sit up straight and everyhting not fun at all!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Every family should have at least a flaw in their rulings, how they treat their childern, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I honestly think Gary was really weird. I don't think when he said he wanted a "perfect" family that he thought about exactly what a perfect family was. He may have wanted a more civilized family and stuff like that in certain areas but just like Zack said, everyone has flaws and that is why were individuals

I'm with Cassidy, if youre only getting like a quarter for raking leaves and don't complain either somethings wrong with you or it's definitely taking place in the past.
